Asuka
The First Capital of Japan
Asuka, in Nara Prefecture, is only about an hour away from Kyoto, Osaka, Nara Park as well as Kansai International Airport.
Preserved by strict regulations of “Asuka Law” enacted in 1980, traditional landscape coexisting with the neighboring nature welcomes visitors. Interactions with locals, each engaging in unique endeavors, enrich the time in the village even more.
It may not be obvious, but it was in Asuka where the country of Japan developed various systems and took its first form as a nation at the end of the 6th century. The village is dotted with ancient kofun (tumuli), mysterious stone sculptures, and remnants of palaces and temples that whisper tales of a bygone era.

About Us

Asuka Village is a small village with a population of about 5,000 people.

Small-scale farmers grow rice and a variety of vegetables in a beautiful, undulating natural landscape.

Most of the accommodations and restaurants are small, but they offer fresh cuisine made with locally nurtured vegetables and a relaxing stay in renovated old folk houses.

In recognition of its sustainable living and initiatives, our village was selected for the Best Tourism Villages by UN Tourism in 2025.

We hope that people from around the world who are interested in sustainable living and unique history around the birth of Japan as a nation will visit our village and satisfy their inner peace and intellectual curiosity.
